Walls

We went for breakfast at friends of ours this morning. It was great to catch up and share where we were at, in our lives. The feeling that life is flying by was mutual. We all want our lives to count for something. It’s vital to feel that what we are doing is making a difference. We all know that we are making a difference in small ways to our families and friends everyday, but the question we were asking was, “Are we really making a difference in the bigger scheme of things?

I guess the older one gets, the clearer it becomes that life isn’t just all about ME. The purpose of life isn’t the sum of all that I have achieved for myself. In fact, it’s exactly the opposite. Life finds its purpose when I can love others, the way Jesus loves me – selfless and expecting nothing in return. And that love means nothing when it’s only spoken about. That love must be expressed in action, because love is only love when it’s given away!

So, if there are walls in our lives that are preventing us from getting to the people that need our love in action, then it’s time to break them down. And these walls always represent fear.

  • The fear that I might lose my friends if I do something crazy like loving the “unlovable”.
  • The fear that I might not be able to make ends meet if I had to spend more time investing in people’s lives than working.
  • The fear that I might have to give up some of my comforts if I decided to live completely selflessly
  • The fear that I will lose my self-importance if I focused on others

I’m not sure what your walls are but they are based on fear. That’s why God tells us “Don’t be afraid” more than He tells us anything else in His Word. He knows that it’s fear that will stop us from living our God-given purpose. He knows that it’s fear that Satan uses more than anything else to distract us. Just imagine what you would be doing today, if you were fearless. I desire to live my life without fear so that I can live a life of purpose.

Have an awesome day!

  1. Great read and great challenge.
We all know what’s right – but why don’t we just go in the right direction? Comfort.
