To start means you can finish!

So many new year’s resolutions have already come crumbling down. We all have good intentions. We all know what it is we should be doing and we all want to do them. Making the decision to do something is an important step, but taking the first step after making that decision is the main thing.

Michael Jordan once said that you miss 100% of the shots you don’t take. I love that quote because it says so much. One of the things it says is that deciding to take a shot is part of the game, but actually taking a shot means you become proactive. And the reason why we don’t take those risky shots in life is because we might fail. It’s because we might be criticised.

My brother-in-law, Paul, is an Iron Man athlete. My friend, Craig, is a marathon runner. I ran a few marathons myself. I know, and they know that doing it doesn’t just happen. When the idea first enters your head to do something as crazy as running 42km, or first swimming a few k’s, then cycling a 100+ and then running 42, you realise it’s going to take a lot of hard work. It’s then that, what you would like to do, and what it’s going to take to achieve it, need to become friends.

There are graveyards full of unfulfilled dreams. Good intentions that never became a reality because that first step was never taken. I dare to say that many of those “crazy” ideas have never evolved into amazing inventions, careers, books, YouTube channels, talk shows or ministries because we might dare to think what others think are impossible, but we don’t act on it.

The God who created you has a wild imagination. Just look at a baby, a bird, a giraffe, an elephant, a dung beetle, the solar system, the universe etc. etc etc. That same God is the One who has given you and me a wild imagination. I dare you to believe that and to allow your imagination, and the realisation of that imagination to be found in God who has infinite imagination and who is longing to see us fulfil our calling in Him.

So, don’t let the magnitude of your dreams and the hard work to turn them into reality scare you. May it inspire you to draw closer to God. The God who wants to see you succeed and become all He has created you to be.
