A simple philosophy in life:
“Stop complaining about things that you don’t agree with. Instead, get off your backside and work hard at changing them. Things won’t just change because you have an issue.”
It’s so easy to sit on the sidelines in life and to criticise and complain about those who are on the playing field. If you are passionate about sports, you will know what I’m talking about. We’re all guilty of it. Sitting in the crowd and “knowing better” how to play the game than those who are on the field. Or sitting on your couch at home, complaining about the coach’s decisions or the umpire’s calls.
Here’s the thing… if you and I knew better then them, why aren’t we the one’s doing the playing or the coaching or the umpiring? Why don’t we get off our couches, change our diets and be willing to go through the rigorous training that is necessary to be a professional athlete. We are more than willing to criticise people but we aren’t willing to do the hard work that actually qualifies us to have a say.
Teddy Roosevelt said the following most amazing and true words:
“It is not the critic who counts; not the man who points out how the strong man stumbles, or where the doer of deeds could have done them better. The credit belongs to the man who is actually in the arena, whose face is marred by dust and sweat and blood; who strives valiantly; who errs, who comes short again and again, because there is no effort without error and shortcoming; but who does actually strive to do the deeds; who knows great enthusiasms, the great devotions; who spends himself in a worthy cause; who at the best knows in the end the triumph of high achievement, and who at the worst, if he fails, at least fails while daring greatly, so that his place shall never be with those cold and timid souls who neither know victory nor defeat.”
So maybe, we need to be doing something about what we see happening in the world, rather than just being passers-by who give running commentary about everything.
If we aren’t happy about our lives and our circumstances, things won’t change just because we decide to complain. Actions change things. It’s time to get busy.
